Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is one of the few types of psychotherapy that is evidence based (over 1,000 research studies) and found to be effective in treating many different disorders. Compared to other forms of therapy, CBT is most often focused on the present, tends to be more limited in duration and focuses on finding solutions.
CBT is rooted in the cognitive model, the way we think about people and/or events impacts the type of emotions we feel. Our emotions then effect our behavior. CBT helps people become aware of their thoughts, identify any distorted thinking and challenge those thoughts. When people learn to change their distorted thoughts, they think more realistically and feel better. When people feel better, their behavior also improves.
CBT therapists get clients actively involved in the treatment process and where to begin the work. Goals and actions plans are created together. There is transparency in how treatment works, clients learn how to use the same skills outside of session and ultimately continue using the tools they learn after treatment ends.
